Leveling

In Adventures in Tambra, characters do not simply gain power—they earn it through the weight of choices, the sting of failure, and the triumph of perseverance.

Leveling represents more than numbers on a page. It marks your character’s journey through the world, a reflection of their scars, their stories, and the legends they begin to shape. Whether you are a wild-eyed wanderer or a quiet sage, leveling is the visible arc of your transformation.

Progress isn’t tracked solely by slain monsters or piles of treasure. In Adventures in Tambra, leveling is tied to experience, not just from combat, but from exploration, roleplay, clever problem-solving, and meaningful choices.

You gain experience by:

  • Defeating enemies in combat
  • Solving puzzles or overcoming environmental challenges
  • Uncovering hidden lore or completing major story quests
  • Roleplaying in alignment with your character’s ideals, flaws, and goals
  • Making impactful decisions that shape the world around you

“True strength is not in the blade you carry, but in the journey that made you carry it.” — Old Plains Saying

Affinity Ranks

As a character’s Affinity with a Primal Force deepens, so does their capacity to channel its power. Each increase in Affinity Rank enhances their potential to inflict damage, restore life, and make their abilities more difficult to resist.

However, greater power comes with greater consequences. With each Rank, a character becomes more attuned—and thus more resistant—to their chosen Affinity, while growing increasingly vulnerable to its opposing force. Their growing connection also radiates outward, making their presence more palpable to others. The higher their Affinity, the more likely they are to draw the attention, welcomed or not, of beings aligned with their Affinity and its opposite.

Example

Talia, a level 8 character with Affinity Rank 3 in Fire, has grown into a formidable flame-wielder. Her magic is fierce, and even her presence seems to shimmer with heat.

During an expedition through a humid, jungle-covered ruin, her party is ambushed by a Water-aligned elemental serpent. Unbeknownst to the group, it was drawn to Talia’s burning aura—her affinity flaring like a beacon in its territory.

As combat begins, the serpent lashes out with a torrent breath attack dealing 12 Water damage. Because Talia’s Fire Affinity is opposed by Water, she suffers -3 to DR and +3 bonus damage—one for each rank in her Affinity. She takes 15 total damage instead of 12.

Later in the battle, a trap triggers and releases a burst of magical fire. While her allies scramble to avoid the blaze, Talia stands her ground. Thanks to her Affinity Rank 3, she automatically resists 3 points of Fire damage—the fire seems to part around her instinctively. If the blast would have dealt 10 damage, she instead only takes 7.

Outside of combat, her growing connection to Fire begins to influence the narrative. Friendly fire elementals recognize her as kin and may offer aid. Conversely, Water-aligned creatures and forces feel her presence like a distant storm, compelled to challenge or extinguish her flame.
